Burlesque Competitions

by The Irresistible O

Entering a Burlesque competition can be an effective way to get your name out there on the Burly community, but at what cost? It takes a lot of time and energy to enter into any type of competition. As I am readying myself to perform at this years Burlypicks I've had to ask myself some key questions:

1. What is it costing me to be in this competition? Please be aware that competitions can be costly, but not only in terms of money but in terms of emotional and physical energy too. You have to buy or embellish present costumes to make sure that you are representing yourself in the best fashion. There may be costs to apply for the contest as well, and paying the application fee does not determine that you get in. It can also be emotionally and physically taxing. It takes mental toughness to undergo any competitive event! You must be purely focused and driven in order to even place, let alone win. Then there is the physical cost-you must exercise to make sure you are looking like you are in top form and to feel good and have enough energy to compete.

2. Is it worth it? No one can answer this but the competitor. For some people it's worth it to simply get the exposure. For others it's only worth it if they win.

3. What if I don't win? Does that mean I'm an awful performer? Although winning is the ultimate aim it just may not  happen. However, that doesn't mean you won't be offered constructive criticism that can be utilized for future competitions and to help you become a better performer. There is also a sense of the common goal amongst the competitors and a sense of belonging;after all we are all in this together and there is a feeling of fun and building backstage.
Remember that every show is a competition and every contest is a competition. But it is a competition between you and you, as you forge on the be your best self. If you can say you did your very best, you grew, and became better then it's worth it!
